When you call 911 for a medical emergency, minutes matter. But the first few minutes after our paramedics arrive aren’t just about sirens and stretchers — they’re about information.
Before we can begin treatment, we need to quickly understand your health history, your medications, and your allergies. Those details can mean the difference between a smooth, effective response and a dangerous delay in care.
That’s where the File of Life comes in.

The File of Life is a simple, free tool — a form kept in your home (usually on your refrigerator or in your wallet/purse) that lists your medical information, medications, emergency contacts, and doctor’s name.
💉 Why It’s So Important
Many people are surprised to learn just how advanced pre-hospital care has become.
Paramedics today can:
Administer a wide range of medications for cardiac emergencies, diabetic complications, breathing problems, allergic reactions, seizures, and more.
Perform cardiac monitoring and EKGs in the field and transmit results directly to hospitals.
Provide airway management, IV therapy, and life-saving interventions before you ever reach the emergency room.
But to do any of that safely, we need to know:
What medications you already take
Any allergies that could cause a reaction
Your medical history (heart disease, diabetes, COPD, etc.)
Your baseline conditions or recent changes
Without that information, even the most skilled paramedic is working at a disadvantage. Guessing isn’t safe — for you or for us.
🏠 How to Get One
The Woodstock Fire Rescue District provides File of Life packets free of charge. You simply fill out the form. When it's done, make sure the people in your household know where to find it; it's very common to carry it in your purse or wallet. Or if you choose, we even provide a nice fridge clip to hang it from.
Need extra copies for family members, or want to update your information? Stop by the headquarters station [435 E. Judd St., Woodstock, IL 60098] during business hours and we will get you set up.
